What In the Wide World of Sports Is a’goin On Here?
By: Sneakers O'Toole | July 23rd, 2009
This month is going to be a slow one for me on this blog, but I will post any news I hear (Yeah, I realize the month has like a week left now).
I was the perusing the DVD collection at Best Buy when I noticed two employees doing some serious trash talking over a game they were playing. It was near closing time, and there was nothing catching my eye in the DVD selection. I walked up to them to find that they were playing FIFA 2003. Of all the editions, they picked that one? Oh well…
They had altered their favorite teams to have all of the stars they wanted. One guy had Henry, Vieri, and Zidane as the top guys, the other guy had Figo, Ronaldo, Nedved, and …Matteo Brighi?
I asked the guy with every intent of implying that he is retarded, “What the hell is Matteo Brighi doing on your dream team?”
He responded, “I don’t know who he is, but he is a 97 in this game. I found him on Parma, and he is damned good.”
All I have to say is…What the hell? I had a lot of problems with that edition of FIFA and the 2004 edition, but holy Christ on a crutch. What made them decide that a man who was not even half good at that time was going to be rated a 97: A rating that no one else came within 3 points of.
Maybe his agent screwed that one up too…
Sure enough, Brighi has made top FIFA 2003 YouTube compilations across the board. Madness, I say.

Of course. Brighi was with Parma in the game, although he at the time belonged to Juventus, but the developers had a hard time putting him on Juventus because they were already so good with Davids, Nedved, Trezeguet and Marcelo Salas all in the upper 80s lower 90s. Brighi of course was rated a 98 as a joke, as it had been customary in the previous editions to do such a thing. Now a days, the highest rated player is around a 93 because of in-game player development systems. But 03 was one of the great games of FIFA. The free kicks were so much fun and the gameplay, although limited, had a lot of goals, especially from the amusingly simple but awesome crossing system and long range shots.

Also, the music was at a high point in this edition. The techno beats still are some of the most played on my iPod to this day.
