Future Offside Tournaments

By: Dave Martinez | May 23rd, 2008

So, The Offside Cup has finally run its course, and Barcelona is declared the winner.

Now what?

Well, for starters, I just got the UEFA Euro 2008 game – and after playing yesterday two games and getting outscored 11 – 5, I have alot of learning to do. So within the next 3-4 weeks, I will officially announce “The EURO 2008 OFFSIDE CUP” tournament.

This will be a tournament exclusively based on the real life groups and teams (yes, that means England will be ineligible). So stay tuned for that bad boy.

But what of another FIFA 08 Tournament?

I have a few ideas i am shooting around –

+ A single table MLS format (14 teams), where everyone will have to play each other twice. Top four teams enter a playoff, 1v4, 2v3, and the winner is crowned champ. Thats 28 games for a player to go through, not an easy task.
+ A “World Cup” much like the offside cup, but with International Teams.
+ “Battle of the Nations” club tournament - 4-5 teams from each nation (or region) will be grouped together, with several groups fighting it out, and the winners of each group are the Best of their Nations teams and advance to play world teams – our own version, just tweeked, of the Club World Cup.

I want to get your ideas. Let me know what it is you would like to do moving forward.

i KNEW fiorentina would get far! i don’t think i’ll be buying the UEFA Euro game so i’m goona wait for the next fifa 08 tourney. Battle of the Nations sounds cool…i would prefer a single table tournament but i’m pretty sure that if someone loses like 3 games on a row they won’t come back and we will be left waiting for them, but any type of tourney would be great!

    Some suggestions…

An Offside Ladder system – you challenge someone above you. If you lose, you go down one place. If you win, you go up two, they go down one. Or whatever. This can go on as long as you want it to, maybe everyone has two challenges a week for 5 weeks or something.

One thing I think should maybe be addressed is some kind of seeding system. If you’re going to run a few tournaments, it’s going to become pretty obvious who the good guys are (the Scandinavian FIFA winner) and who the sucky ones are (me). So teams should be allocated according to some kind of system like that to try to even it out.

I will be asking the Offsides Community through a poll what system.

I will be doing seeding for future Offsides tournaments – not based on Gamer Ranks, since that can be deceiving, but by ***** system – 5 stars in their own elimination, 4 stars and so on.

    keep the suggestions coming!
